Understanding Operating Authority (MC Number)

What is a MC Number?

MC number (motor carrier number) is an Operating Authority with FMCSA DOT gov. You only need a MC number if you operate across state lines for compensation (for hire). Moving companies, Passenger Transporting and Federally regulated goods that cross state lines all need an MC number. Some companies may be required to get an MC number to work with certain brokers and companies as well. Other operating authorities include freight forwarders and household goods brokers.
